For the next month or so, I’ll be posting some on our big 20th Birthday. There is so much to say, I hope that I can remember most of it. Wish me luck.
It seems like only just a few weeks ago but WCKM, as of April 21st, will be on the air for 20 years. In the world of broadcasting, staying on the air for 20 years with the same type of station is almost unheard of. The fact that almost all of “The Good Guys” have been on 98.5 for over 10 years each is unreal. Pete Cloutier, Jim Scott and Kip Grant have been here for all 20 years. Lee Pecue and I have been here since ’97. Ken Leccese joined in ’98. Brian Delaney got on board in ’99. Mike Dubray arrived in ’05. Gonzo started with us in ’09. Matt Stone, the rookie started with us last summer. Our intern, The Shadow, Seth Cooper has been with us since February of ’13. Longevity like this doesn’t happen often. Lee and Brian left for greener pastures but came back.
Why have we stayed together for so long? Some have said it was because we are all a bunch of back slappers. I really don’t know what that means. I think they are jealous.
I think the reason we have been together for this long is because we all LOVE what we do. A passion.
We may not get along each and every day, what family doesn’t. But at the end of the day, we dust ourselves off and get ready for tomorrow.
I am very proud of the work all of us do on a day in and day out basis. We are not cookie cutter broadcasters. WCKM has never fell into that category. I know it sounds funny, but I don’t think of any of “The Good Guys” as DJ’s. The more accurate description is Personalities.
That’s what the station was built on and hopefully will continue on as so.
